Beta Version of Paper Guide for Industry Comment

The best practice guide, ‘Optimised Paper Handling and Logistics’ is released in a Beta version for open industry comments. The review process will ensure the final publication delivers a comprehensive and complete guide to best practices across the entire paper supply and process chain. The purpose of the guide is to improve the economic and environmental performance across the supply chain from the paper maker through to the printer-converter.

Visit the OPHAL website to download the first chapter of the best practice guide. In fall of 2016 the full version will be available from this website.

‘Optimised Paper Handling and Logistics’ is a unique international, cross-industry collaborative project across the supply chain — from the mill, through transport, storage, handling and press preparation — to produce a common, best practice tool and global reference for suppliers, transporters and printers to improve their economic and environmental efficiency. It covers paper for publishing and packaging applications for all major printing processes using rolls and sheets of paper and board. The result will be an e-book of around 200 pages available at no cost to users.

The project was initiated 2014 by the International Centre for Manufacture by Print and WAN-IFRA, joined by the European Rotogravure Association, Idealliance, and Nordic Offset Printers Association.

The current sponsor member list (May 2016) includes:

ABP Group • Axel Springer • Bolzoni Auramo • Cascade Corporation • DALIM SOFTWARE • Earthpac • European Rotogravure Association • Fr. Meyer’s Sohn • Goss International • ‘The Hindu’ • Holmen • icmPrint • Idealliance • If P&C Insurance • INTAKT Transportberater • Koenig & Bauer Group • Malayala Manorama • Mondi Extrusion Coatings • Nordic Offset Printing Association • Paperdam Foundation • Sappi • SCA • Sonoco-Alcore • SpanSet • Stora Enso • tesa • ‘Times of India’ • Transwaggon • UPM • World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers, WAN-IFRA

Modular Supply Chain Content

The guide addresses the supply chain with seven modules:

1: Overview Paper & Cores, Wrapping & Pallets 2: Damage Inspection & Diagnosis
2: Inspect, Report, Evaluate & Repair
3: Warehouse/Paper Store
4: Handling Equipment
5: Best Practice Roll & Pallet Handling
6: Transportation, Securing
    6.1: Rail
    6.2: Road
    6.4: Containers, Open Industry Review
    6.3: Maritime
7: At the Printer, Paper onto Press

“Around 50 people from 30 organisations have contributed their expertise along with more than 20 publications that the guide has draw content from,” said project manager-editor Nigel Wells from the International Centre for Manufacture by Print. “We believe that the Beta version’s content will be over 90% complete but we want to take this to over 99% and this can only be done by inviting members of the global industry to review, correct and complete the base that has been created.”

The guide’s modules will become progressively available for comment. To become a reviewer, simply go to the World Printers Online Forum (wan-ifra.org/PaperGuide) to download the  modules and either post short comments on to the Forum, or make larger changes on the accompanying manuscript document.

For your review please find attached PDF files of content for different chapters of the guide.

Two methods of correction/commenting are possible:
1  Post short comments here on to the Forum, or
2  Make larger changes on the accompanying manuscript document and send directly to the editor Nigel Wells: vimw@wanadoo.fr.

Final e-Book in fall 2016

“We plan a review period, before publishing the finalised e-book version in fall 2016 for free download and digital print-on-demand. A classic printed version is being considered on a subscription basis where users will pay only the production and delivery costs with a modest handling fee,” adds Manfred Werfel, Deputy CEO of WAN-IFRA. The initial language will be English and other languages will be added as sub-projects.

This unique cross-industry collaborative project brings together expertise from across the entire paper supply chain from the mill, through transport, storage, handling and printing. Its goal is to establish a common best practice tool and global reference for suppliers, transporters, converters and printers to improve their efficiency.

Integrated cross industry best practices improves operating performance by reducing economic and environmental losses from avoidable damage and waste, improves safety and communication while simplifying training and supervision. It also gives a better vision across the entire value chain that is addressed in 11 modules:

Paper & Cores — Wrapping & Pallets
Inspect, Report, Evaluate & Repair
Warehouse & Paper Store
Paper Handling Equipment
Roll & Pallet Handling Techniques
Securing & Lashing
Road Transport
Rail Transport
Containers Transport
Marine Transport
At the Printer — Paper onto Press

Substrates are the highest single cost for all printing and packaging applications – any reduction in their waste and damage improves both economic and environmental performance. The guide covers paper and board in rolls and sheets used for publishing and packaging applications for all major printing processes.

The 270-page guide has a cover price of 250 € / $280 but is available as a FREE e-book to users because project members believe that price should not be a barrier to making best practices available to all.
